The North American Car and Truck of the Year jurors have released their long list of early contenders for the 2014 top spots.
Among the candidates for the two prestigious annual awards are:
- 5 Chevrolets (Corvette, Impala, Spark EV, SS, Silverado)
- 4 Mercedes-Benz’s (B-Class, CLA-Class, E-Class, S-Class)
- 3 Kias (Cadenza, Forte Soul)
2 Mazdas (6, 3)
- 2 Cadillacs (CTS, ELR)
- 2 Fiats (500L, 500E)
In the truck category there were far fewer multiple nominees.
Nissan had two entrants:
while Toyota had 3:
The new Chevrolet Corvette and Cadillac ELR are both early candidates in the car category; the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 2500 and 2500 and Ford Transit Connect are all early considerations in the truck and utility category.
The jurors in December will narrow the list to five for cars and for trucks and utilities. A winner from each category will be announced during the North American International Auto Show in January.
To be eligible for the competition, a vehicle must have been substantially changed from the previous model and must go on sale shortly after the announcement of the award. Cars must have “reasonably foreseeable” North American sales of 5,000 for cars or 2,000 for trucks.
The Cadillac ATS was chosen North American Car of the Year in 2013 and the Ram 1500 won the honors of Truck/Utility.
