A peek at Bentley’s first SUV released

BY GERRY MILES

Sure, it’s not a great shot. It’s not mean to be. It’s a teaser. And it’s not from Death Valley or Brenda Priddy would have snagged it in all of its disguises a long, long time ago.

But it does show that the upcoming SUV will closely resemble the concept model shown a while ago. The folks at Crewe say it’s due to be roadworth in 2016.

Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive at Bentley Motors, commenting at a press conference in London, said: “It will create a completely new segment in the SUV market.”

The SUV forms part of Bentley’s £800 million investment in new model and facilities development in the next three years. The company anticipates a minimum annual sales volume of 3000 SUVs.

Stay tuned.

2015 A8L

2015 A8L

– More powerful engine and new design elements for 2015 underscore Audi A8 as the drivers’ luxury sedan
– A8’s redesigned full LED headlights, now standard on the full model line

Audi today announced pricing for its newly redesigned 2015 A8 model line. The 2015 A8 further underscores its positioning as the drivers’ luxury sedan in 2015 through design changes that communicate a wider stance and more dynamic look throughout the A8 model line.

“As the flagship of the Audi brand, the A8 represents the best in Audi innovation, design and craftsmanship” said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. “The A8 has been a strong contributor toward building our brand and the changes for the 2015 model year will continue to build upon that success.”

The A8 model line continues to offer industry-leading performance and design. The ASF® aluminum construction of the A8 and S8 models provides exceptional rigidity and performance while enabling excellent efficiency due to its lightweight characteristics. Completely redesigned LED headlights are now standard on the full model line and are complemented by powerful creases in the hood as well as a newly designed grille, bumper and splitter.

The A8 L TDI® clean diesel makes a powerful statement in achieving the best fuel economy in its segment with an EPA estimated 24 city/ 36 highway/ 28 combined mpg, boasting improved efficiency without compromise on performance, while the A8, equipped with the optional 4.0T V8 engine, has been improved upon for 2015 with horsepower increasing from 420hp to 435 hp. A new electromechanical steering column helps reduce weight and improves fuel efficiency. Dynamic steering, newly available as part of the sport package, provides variable-ratio steering that increases responsiveness based on speed and steering input required.

Industry-leading technology continues to improve the driving experience. Active lane assist helps keep the A8 between lane markings through active steering adjustments. Night vision assist now offers animal detection that can help alert the driver to deer and other animals that are hard to see in the night. Animal detection joins pedestrian detection – previously available in the A8 model line – in the night vision system that will outline the image of the animal/pedestrian and make an audible sound if the object is in danger of entering the driver path. Also new are secondary collision assist, which automatically applies the brakes after an initial collision and a heads-up display for easier viewing of vehicle speed, navigation and adaptive cruise control functions.

Inside, the new A8 offers available 22-way front comfort seats with 5 different massage functions, as well as improved acoustic measures for a quieter cabin experience and optimized trunk packaging for increased space and usability.

The updated S8 becomes even sportier with its new exterior design, featuring larger air intakes in the lower bumper and an available new sport exhaust with wide oval quad tailpipes, which allows passengers to audibly experience the 520hp twin-turbo V8. Inside, the newly available Vermont Brown Audi design selection leather appointed interior and carbon twill copper inlays combine the sporty character of the S8 with stunning elegance and craftsmanship.

The top of the range, the A8 L W12 model is the first 12 cylinder engine to feature intelligent cylinder control, helping provide improved highway efficiency. The top of the line flagship model also benefits from all of the design changes to the lighting, hood and grille. The A8 L W12 offers a selection of five different inlays and an a la carte menu of options for customers to create the A8 L W12 suited specifically to their needs.

2015 Golf TDI

MODEL YEAR 2015: NEW GOLF FAMILY, REDESIGNED JETTA, AND NEW TDI® CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE HEAD THE CHANGES

In a busy year, Volkswagen will also add a new Golf SportWagen, an all-new Golf R, a redesigned Touareg SUV, and the company’s first U.S.-market EV, the e-Golf

  • All-new Golf is bigger, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than the previous model, seats five, and has a larger trunk than any midsize sedan
  • New Golf GTI has 210-horsepower engine, with improved fuel efficiency and performance
  • e-Golf is Volkswagen’s first full Battery Electric Vehicle for sale in the U.S.
  • Redesigned Jetta offers a better value, more available driver assistance features, and refreshed exterior and interior
  • All-new Golf R, with 292 horsepower, will go on sale during the 2015 model year
  • Jetta SportWagen will be replaced by bigger, even more spacious Golf SportWagen early in 2015
  • Touareg is replaced by a refreshed model that offers new front and rear styling, an even more refined interior, and new available driver assistance features
  • Passat, Beetle, Golf, and Jetta TDI® Clean Diesel models all receive new, more fuel-efficient EA288 engine, with 10 more horsepower

Herndon, VA  – The 2015 model year is momentous for Volkswagen. First of all, the Jetta, Volkswagen’s best-selling car, is redesigned, with new styling and driver assistance systems, as well as improved fuel efficiency and enhanced content. The newly available driver assistance systems include Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, the Forward Collision Warning system, and Park Distance Control. The Jetta 1.8T model offers improved fuel efficiency thanks to revised aerodynamics, while the TDI® Clean Diesel model also benefits from fitment of the new EA288 diesel engine. In the case of the manual transmission TDI model, EPA estimated highway fuel economy is now rated at 46 mpg, an improvement of 4 mpg.

This model year also marks the introduction of the seventh-generation Golf and Golf GTI models, which are bigger, more fuel-efficient, and better equipped than ever before. The new Golf is available in two forms: powerful and efficient TSI® gasoline and TDI Clean Diesel, powered by the new EA288 turbocharged and direct-injection engine. The Golf GTI comes standard with a 210-horsepower, 2.0-liter TSI engine, with the option of a 220-hp engine with the Performance Package that is available late in the calendar year. Golf and Golf GTI models fitted with the optional Driver Assistance Package have been awarded the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK + from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

In addition, Volkswagen will introduce its first fully electric vehicle to the U.S. market, the e-Golf. Due to go on sale in select markets in November of 2014, the e-Golf has more standard torque and more versatility than any of its closest EV rivals. When it goes on sale, it will have a standard 7.2kW onboard charger and Fast Charging Capability, which allows for 80 percent charge within 30 minutes at select DC fast charging stations. The car should provide an everyday driving range of between 70 and 90 miles, with a maximum range of approximately 115 miles.

Later in the model year, Volkswagen will introduce the all-new Golf R and the Golf SportWagen. The Golf R will feature a 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system and a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine that makes 292 horsepower. The car will only be offered in four-door form for the U.S. and will initially be available only with a six-speed dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission. A six-speed manual will be added to the lineup at a later date.

The Golf SportWagen replaces the Jetta SportWagen early in 2015. Like the all-new Golf, it is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture and offers better fuel economy, greater versatility, and more interior room than the previous model. It will be offered in two forms: 1.8-liter TSI gasoline engine with five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions; and the latest EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine with the choice of six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG automatic transmissions.

All Volkswagen models fitted with the 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine—Passat, Beetle, and Beetle Convertible in addition to the Golf and the Jetta—benefit from the introduction of the EA288 engine. Despite the similarity in basic specifications, this is an all-new engine that produces 150 horsepower—10 more than before—at 3,500 rpm, as well as 236 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. The engine offers fuel economy benefits for all the cars in which it is offered, as well as reduced emissions.

At the beginning of 2015, halfway through the model year, the Touareg will be replaced by a refreshed model that features new front and rear styling, a refined interior, and a host of available new driver assistance features. These include Lane Assist, Side Assist (which monitors blind spots) and ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist with City Emergency Braking.

The e-Golf features more torque (199 pound feet) than its main rivals and is also more versatile, with seating for five and more cargo space than any mid-size sedan.

The 2015 Golf will be available with two or four doors and with two powertrains: the EA888 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission; and the new EA288 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel, fitted with a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is the first time the entire Golf lineup will feature powerful and efficient turbocharged engines. The Golf 1.8T now has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 36 mpg when equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission, an improvement of 6 mpg over the outgoing 2.5-liter Golf. The manual transmission model achieves 37 mpg on the highway.

The all-new Golf is better equipped than its predecessor, no matter the trim level. The limited-availability entry Golf Launch Edition two-door with manual transmission starts at $17,995 (plus $820 destination and handling) and adds the following over the outgoing Golf 2.5L: a turbocharged and direct-injection four cylinder as the base engine, along with a standard 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth® connectivity, a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® integration, and SiriusXM® Satellite Radio. The VW SportWagen has long been a top choice for customers who want a car that’s fun-to-drive and offers a large cargo area that is truly versatile. This new Golf SportWagen is even more appealing, offering nearly 10 percent more cargo room with the rear seats folded than the outgoing model. Essentially, the Golf SportWagen provides a sportier alternative to compact SUVs.

The new SportWagen will be offered with two powertrains. The first is a 170 horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine, mated to five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. The TDI Clean Diesel model will be powered by the new EA288 2.0-liter common-rail, turbocharged and direct-injection diesel engine that makes150 horsepower, an improvement of 10 hp over the current SportWagen model, and 236 pound-feet pf torque. • Golf R will go on sale in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2015

The 2015 Golf R will be the most powerful version of the Golf ever to be sold in this market. With 292 horsepower, the all-new Golf R has 36 horsepower more than the previous version, which was sold as a 2013 model. Despite the additional horsepower, the new R model is expected to be considerably more fuel-efficient than its predecessor with a manufacturer-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 31 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission, up from 27 mpg.

Like all three previous Golf R models, the all-new model transfers its power to the road via a permanent all-wheel-drive system; in this case, the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex® coupling. The all-new Golf R is equipped with an extensive package of exclusive features. Along with specially designed bumpers, side skirts, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, the Golf R also has standard Bi-Xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights (in a dual-U design) and a two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tips. Following the updates that arrived with the 2014 model, which included a new 1.8-liter turbocharged EA888 engine that replaced the 2.5-liter five-cylinder unit, the 2015 Jetta brings with it a fresh new face and some important updates underneath. The subtly redesigned exterior not only provides the Jetta with a crisp new look, but also helps increase the overall efficiency of the car by improving aerodynamics: the 1.8T models gain a 1 mpg improvement on the EPA’s estimated highway fuel economy, to 37 mpg. Additionally, the 2015 Jetta features an updated interior, the new EA288 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine (with 10 additional horsepower), and a host of newly available driver assistance systems.

The manual transmission TDI model now has a range of up to 814 highway miles on one tank of Clean Diesel fuel. Consumer Reports hailed Buick Regal as economical Euro challenger

2014 Buick Regal

2014 Buick Regal

Tests finds Volvo S60 is a solid, practical competitor

YONKERS, NY— The recently freshened Buick Regal and Volvo S60 are giving their sportier and more prestigious competitors from BMW and Mercedes-Benz serious competition, in Consumer Reports latest tests.

Consumer Reports engineers found the Regal’s performance, handling and easy infotainment system appealing.  That helped the Regal beat the Volvo S60 in a head-to-head road test. Ultimately, the Regal wound up finishing just one point shy of the class-leading BMW 328i and tied the Mercedes-Benz C250 for second place in the organization’s overall ratings of upscale sport sedans—while costing thousands less.

“The Regal is a thoroughly developed and satisfying mid-sized sports sedan that’s more reminiscent of a German sports car than the softly sprung luxo-barges that Buick was once known for,” said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ director of automotive testing.

Consumer Reports engineers found the Regal’s revised 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes the car quicker and more fuel-efficient than when it first came out. The turbo engine accelerates effortlessly, posting a 0-to-60-mph time of 7.4 seconds. The smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission is quick and responsive.

Ratings and road test reports for the Buick Regal and Volvo S60 are available at www.ConsumerReports.org. The reports, along with evaluations of the new Mercedes-Benz S550 (“Excellent” overall score), Audi A3 (“Very Good”), and Maserati Ghibli (“Very Good”), appear in the September issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale Thursday, July 31.

Consumer Reports measured the Regal’s fuel economy at 24 mpg overall, which is mid-pack for the category. But unlike many turbocharged engines, the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Regal doesn’t require premium fuel. The Regal rides very well, with a trace of firmness at lower speeds. Handling is agile and tied down. On the track, the Regal was quite capable, snaking through Consumer Reports’ avoidance maneuver at a commendable speed of 53.5 mph with plenty of grip.

Consumer Reports found the Volvo S60’s new, 240-hp, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission, is a marked improvement in drivability, fuel economy, and refinement over the previous five-cylinder engine. Power is generous and smooth, with a well-integrated turbo that makes the car very responsive and provides effortless power. Fuel economy is decent, at 25 mpg overall.

Testers found the S60’s handling is fairly nimble and secure. The ride was so firm that it borders on being stiff. The S60’s interior is well-finished, and reasonably quiet with a simple and a clean design. Front seats are roomy and very comfortable, but the rear seat is snug, with tight leg and head room. The coupe-like styling limits rear visibility and contributes to a cramped rear seat. Trunk room is good.

While the Regal is currently Consumer Reports Recommended, the organization doesn’t yet have reliability data on the S60’s new powertrain. Previous generations of the S60 have had average reliability.

Consumer Reports’ testing procedures are the most comprehensive of any U.S. publication or Web site. More than 50 individual tests are performed on every vehicle, including evaluations of braking, handling, comfort, convenience, safety, and fuel economy. Roughly 6,000 miles of general driving and evaluations are racked up on each test car during the testing process. CR buys all its test cars anonymously from dealers. Other reviewers base their evaluations on press cars that are hand-picked by the automakers.

Consumer Reports is the world’s largest independent product-testing organization. Using its more than 50 labs, auto test center, and survey research center, the nonprofit rates thousands of products and services annually. Founded in 1936, Consumer Reports has over 8 million subscribers to its magazine, website and other publications. Its advocacy division, Consumers Union, works for health reform, food and product safety, financial reform, and other consumer issues in Washington, D.C., the states, and in the marketplace.

Munich. A new virtual race car, the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, takes to the racetrack in Gran Turismo® 6, the acclaimed racing title available exclusively on PlayStation®3. The race car, created by BMW Group Design, boasts a virtual three-litre six-cylinder inline engine developed by BMW M GmbH, which promises a peak performance of 404 kW/549 hp, fast laps and optimum handling and control. “The development of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo combines our many years of motorsports experience with signature BMW Design. The race car anticipates future racing trends and allows gaming fans even more to experience BMW racing quality,” says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President Brand Communication BMW, BMW i, BMW M. Starting this Thursday, visitors to BMW Welt in Munich will also be able to take the BMW Vision Gran Turismo to the virtual track within the BMW M exhibition. Besides PlayStation®3 gaming stations, an additional dedicated racing seat with a specially designed three-screen display will be available making the experience totally immersive, and the closest you can get to driving the car in real life.

Following in the tradition of the successful BMW touring cars of the 1970s, the BMW design team has created an uncompromising road racer for the modern era. Crisp proportions and a dynamic silhouette give the BMW Vision Gran Turismo the appearance of speed, even standing still. Front and rear spoilers ensure optimum down-force, while all air conduction elements reduce drag and lower the vehicle’s total weight through the use of carbon fibre. The paint finish in BMW M colours traces the flow of the airstream, recalling BMW Motorsports successes. Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles said: “The BMW Vision Gran Turismo is pure BMW sportiness and dynamics. It’s a precise driving machine engineered and designed to race and win.”

The technology in the BMW Vision Gran Turismo is just as impressive as its uncompromising design. A powerful three-litre six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers a maximum power of 404 kW/549 hp between 6,200 min-1 and 7,300 min-1. Its peak torque of 680 Nm is developed at just 1,900 rpm. A sequential six-speed transmission, operated by gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, distributes engine power to the driven rear axle. The outstanding performance characteristics of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, which weighs only 1,180 kilograms, include perfect 50:50 axle load distribution.

The Gran Turismo® video game, first released in 1998, is an award-winning racing simulation. The series is one of the biggest virtual racing games worldwide and PlayStation’s most successful franchise. A wide range of realistic racetrack options and authentic-looking HD graphic images characterise the game. According to Sony Computer Entertainment, the complete series has sold over 70 million games in more than 100 countries to date.
