Latest Pilot family tire delivers incredible wet, dry and winter performance

DETROIT –   At the North American International Auto Show, Michelin introduced the latest innovation from its Pilot Family of performance tires: the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport Michelin_Pilot_Sport_AS_3__LogoAll-Season 3+. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S3+ delivers true all-season performance and incredible wet and dry braking. This latest addition to the MICHELIN Pilot Family is an evolution of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S 3, transferring the best of high-performance racing technology into a street tire made for the roads and highways of North America.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S3+ combines a unique tread design with enhanced compound technology to provide excellent snow traction and incredible wet and dry braking:

  • 28% better snow traction than the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport A/S 3
  • More dry grip than a leading competitive max performance summer tire
  • The shortest wet and dry braking of leading competitive tires in the ultra-high performance A/S category

“All-season tires are known for being effective for three seasons, and in regions with light-PSAS3plus_Lt1Q_8ito-moderate winter weather,” said Scott Clark, chief operating officer, Michelin North America. “For those considering high performance all-season tires, the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ is the best choice as it combines breakthrough levels of dry and wet grip while providing great snow traction for true all-season performance.”

As a member of the Pilot Family, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S3+ benefits from Michelin’s heritage in endurance racing and arsenal of technological innovations. Specifically, the new tire features:

  • Michelin’s Helio+ CompoundTM combined with unique biting edges in the tread grooves that grab loose snow to help acceleration and braking in winter conditions, PSAS3plus_Tread_8iresulting in confident mobility in cold and snow conditions.
  • Variable Contact Patch 3.0, originally developed for Formula 1 endurance racing, which distributes the forces and temperatures more evenly over the contact patch. It is combined with an aggressive asymmetric tread pattern inspired by the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport, simultaneously maximizing dry grip, wet grip and even wear.
  • PSAS3plus_Rt3Q_8i
  • Extreme amounts of silica in the tread compound (derived from wet endurance race tire technology used at Le Mans) combined with variable thickness sipes and large circumferential grooves, resulting in incredible wet grip and resistance to hydroplaning in deep water.

The MICHELIN® Pilot® Family of tires — which also currently includes the MICHELIN® Pilot® Super Sport, MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport Cup 2 and MICHELIN® Pilot® Alpin® PA4 — is the direct outcome of more than 120 years of tire innovation and validation.

“With the MICHELIN Pilot Family of ultra-high performance tires, we continuously merge the lessons derived from our global motorsports victories with our uncompromising standards for quality and safety,” added Clark. “Installing a set of tires from the MICHELIN Pilot Family is a simple way for driving enthusiasts to improve their vehicle’s performance.”

The MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport A/S3+ tire is designed, engineered and manufactured in North America. It will launch in March and eventually be available in 90 sizes, ranging from 175/65/R15 to 285/35/ZR20 with fitments for vehicles such as the Corvette, BMW M3, Audi A5 and Ford Mustang, among others. Michelin will offer a limited 45,000-mile warranty and the product will start with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $149. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S3+ tire is backed by the Michelin Promise Plan, a comprehensive tire service package for MICHELIN replacement tire owners.

Consumers are encouraged to visit the Michelin Tire Selector on http://www.michelinman.com to find a complete listing of MICHELIN Pilot Sport A/S3+ tire benefits and to research the best tire for their individual needs.

Change your wiper blades every six months

image001BY GERRY MILES

Sure, it’s a promotion but I just had some wipers that left the windshield smeared after a recent rainstorm swept through the area unexpectedly. It reminded me, as Rain-X did, it’s wise to change your wiper blades on a regular basis.

When the blades squeak, chatter, skip, smear or streak reducing driving visibility, your wipers are overdue to be tossed and swapped out. Drivers can keep their wiper blades clean by running a soapy sponge up and down either side of the squeegee. If wiper blades are streaking on a clean windshield, it is time to change the blades. Typically wiper blades last 6 to 12 months from the time of installation depending on weather conditions.

Rain-X offers a text reminder to change your wiper blades every 6 month to 1 year and an exclusive offer of $10 off on your next Rain-X wiper blade purchase.

Clean up on your trade-in with these 10 easy fixes

BY GERRY MILES

Yeah, sure we never wash the rental car, you don’t spit into the wind, and never mistake someone’s silence as a sign of weakness. You KNOW those things. And you also KNOW that a cleaned, well-prepared car at trade-in time, presents a well-kept image, and returns a higher value at the sale.

With that in mind, the folks at Coverhound put together 10 easy fixes that will erase any concerns about your maintenance habits (you do change the oil and backup your PC every day, too, right?) when you sell your vehicle.

  1. SEE THE LIGHT(S). If the brake lights, headlights and high beams don’t shine, it’ll will make prospective buyers wonder what else you haven’t fixed.
  2. CAR MATS. Replace any floor mats that have seen better days and hit carpeted areas with a upholstery cleaner.
  3. BUMPERS. Back-to-black bumper cleaner will help remove the remnants of bumper stickers past.
  4. DASHBOARD. Wax will help restore some shine to that faded dash. THere’s a number of cleaners in easy to use containers to restore luster and remove dirt and dust. Think of what you’d think if you were seeing your vehicle for the first time.
  5. PAINT SWIRLS. Color polish will help remove those unsightly swirls and restore brightness to sun worn paint.
  6. PAINT CHIPS. Pick up a touch-up kit that includes primer, paint and lacquer that match the color of your vehicle.
  7. DENTS. Rather than doing this one yourself, call a paint-less dent repair service.
  8. SCRATCHES. Scratch repair products can help remove lighter scratches, but deeper ones will need to be filled and repainted by a professional.
  9. WINDSHIELD. Talk to a professional about whether any cracks can be repaired or if replacing the windshield is the only option.
  10. TIRES. Use wax or a paint-on product to get rid of that scuffed-up look. There are many products in an easy to use spray bottle – probably the same stuff the reconditioning shop at the dealer uses to make them look shiny and race ready. Use it, please.

Pro 4 off-road downhill slalom truck race on snow back at Sunday River in 2015

It’s the four letter word you either hate or love: Snow.

Living in New England, we all know what a struggle it can be to drive in it, manage a straight path on the roadways and arrive safely over the river and through the woods at grandmother’s house.

The Red Bull “frozen rush” takes winter driving to an extreme extreme. These drivers race their fired up pickup trucks DOWN HILL. On snow. On purpose. For show. And, of course, some pay dough.

The folks at Sunday River in Maine will again host 900-horsepower off-road Pro 4 trucks for the second year in a row on January 8-9, 2015.

It’s hard to imagine slalom racing in pickup trucks down a mountain, over jumps, gates and slopes like the folks on TV on skis. It boggles the mind but the picture at the top of this post shows what they can do. To see what it looks like, click on the video link here.

In 2014, Sunday River Ski Resort, just a few short hours north of Boston, played host to eight of the country’s best professional off-road truck racers, who ventured far from their usual dirt, sand and gravel tracks to tackle unprecedented terrain, including icy berms, snow-covered jumps and steep slopes.  In the end it was motorsports legend Ricky Johnson who was crowned champion in the first ever off-road truck race on snow.  He now looks to defend his title against this year’s stacked roster of industry greats and hungry newcomers.

“Winning the title last year was amazing, especially after going head to head with the best in the business.  It could have been anyone’s day, but I’m glad it was mine,” said the recent Motorsports Hall of Famer. “This year won’t be any easier.  Everyone wants that title now and like I said to Johnny (Greaves) last year… My a** is here, come kick it.”

Returning to compete this year alongside Johnson is Bryce Menzies, Todd LeDuc, Johnny Greaves, Scott Douglas, Rob MacCachren and Carl Renezeder. New to the wearies of winter weather racing will be decorated freestyle motocross rider turned off-road champion, Brian Deegan and young up-and-comer RJ Anderson.  Both are standout warriors in the 2-wheel drive off-road class and are stepping up to Pro 4 truck for a shot at the Red Bull Frozen Rush title.

The competition airs on NBC as part of the year-long Red Bull Signature Series, the most progressive action sports event property in the world.

Red Bull Frozen Rush created a new chapter in the history book of off-road racing in 2014, and this winter, it will return to push the progression of the sport even further. For more information, including the schedule for an additional Fan Day on-site, please visit www.redbull.com/frozenrush.

Ram’s ‘Farmer in All of Us’ American Portrait Book Published by National Geographic

The Ram Truck brand has launched a new photography book with National Geographic.

The Ram Truck brand has launched a new photography book with National Geographic.

BY GERRY MILES

It’s not often that I can outright support the various knickknacks sold by automakers to sate their loyal buyers’ needs, but this is an exception.

Dodge and now Ram has produced some wonderful commercials and tag lines, going back to “Made in Detroit” to last year’s heartfelt commercial “The Farmer in All of Us.”

Now that commercial, and some of the shots are featured in a book and sold as separate prints that would look smart hanging in an office or almost anywhere.

The 300-page book is really a wonderful photographic essay, available at http://www.ramtrucks.com/outfitter, as part Ram’s ‘Year of the Farmer’ initiative launched with Super Bowl ad last year. Proceeds from the sale benefit the  National FFA Organization’s ‘Give the Gift of Blue’ program

“The Farmer in All of Us: An American Portrait” is $45 online and should hit retail stores for the spring of 2014.

To create the book, 10 world-class photographers traversed America’s heartland over three weeks to capture the essence of the farmer. Paul Harvey’s “So God Made a Farmer” speech served as their inspiration. The photographers’ original goal was to create the visual backdrop for a television commercial celebrating the “Year of the Farmer.” The two-minute tribute aired during Super Bowl XLVII, stopping the nation in its tracks.

The book includes more than 240 photos conveying the same spirit as the Ram Truck brand, which celebrates the values of dignity, fellowship and sacrifice through hard work. Just as the “Farmer” television video did, the book aims to inspire the next generation of America’s farmers.
