TORRANCE, Calif., March 18, 2015 – One look at Scion won’t be enough for guests attending the New York International Auto Show.  It will take two looks (or more) to see the World Debuts from Scion. Both the Scion iM and the newly named Scion iA will be revealed on the eve of the show, March 31, 2015.

Meanwhile the Scion iA sedan is designed to appeal to young people who need a little more practicality, but still want engaging styling and outstanding driving dynamics.

The “i” in the models’ names can stand for intriguing, individual, and easy on customers’ income. The “M” reflects the hatchback’s modern style and multi-faceted uses. Meanwhile the “A” for the sedan denotes the accommodating trunk and the aggressive styling.

“We’ve been eagerly waiting for this moment and are excited to introduce our new Scions in New York,” said Scion Group Vice President Doug Murtha. “Both the iM and the iA are tremendous additions to our line-up and will appeal to young people with different perspectives and needs. These cars represent the evolution of Scion and are kicking off a new wave of momentum for the brand.”

There’s little surprise, really, that after the successful launch of the Toyota FR-S/Subaru BRZ that a more sporting edition would eventually arrive. Today, it has.

Scio, aka Toyota’s hip-hop happening’ arm, added some of Toyota’s Racing Development or TRD tweaks to reveal the FR-S Release Series 1.0 at the NY Auto Show.

The Series 1.0 is a limited edition with just 1,500 copies to be built with such enhanced features as a custom-designed aero kit with a rear spoiler and side fender garnish, TRD Quad Tip Exhaust System, TRD lowering springs and Smart Key with Push Button Start and Yuzu exterior paint color.

The series offers either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) will start under $30,000, excluding the delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee of $755.

Additional FR-S Release Series 1.0 features include:

TRD steering wheel
TRD shift knob
Black seats with T-pattern
HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights
Dual auto AC
TRD logo cargo mat

Each vehicle will feature its sequential release series badge (1 of 1500) on its brushed aluminum shifter surround plate. The cars are expected to arrive in dealerships in August.

Hyundai lets images out of new Sonata

It’s not quite the same problem Jeep has, whereby “someone” releases images of its new vehicles just ahead of its launch, spoiling the party, but it still draws attention just the same.

Hyundai (it rhymes with Sunday), has dropped two images of its all-new midsized sedan that will be revealed at the upcoming NY Auto Show. The Korean edition will have the wraps taken over later this month.

The other day, an artist’s rendering of the interior (below) was released.

A Hyundai drawing of the new Sonata interior was recently released by the automaker.

Stay tuned, there’s surely more to see at the carmaker tried to whet the appetite for its reveal.

OnStar’s RemoteLink added to Windows phones

OnStar RemoteLink

OnStar RemoteLink

The release hit my inbox before Steve Ballmer announced he’d resign within a year from the software giant and MSFT stock prices rose.

Having been around when OnStar was first introduced decades ago at the NY Auto Show and how great it is at helping people out of jams, notifying first responders when crashes take place and the like, the news gets better.  OnStar’s RemoteLink Mobile App is now the first remote telemetry app from an automaker that works on the four primary smartphone platforms – iPhone, Android, Blackberry and now Microsoft Windows phones.

(Insert Blue Screen of Death joke here)

Drivers select Microsoft Windows phones can start experiencing remote vehicle connectivity. The app is available on both Windows Phone 7 and 8 operating systems, and will be accessible in the Windows Phone Store on mobile devices.

“RemoteLink remains one of our subscribers’ most desired OnStar services, so to be able to offer it across all of the major smartphone platforms is a great step for us,” said Steve Schwinke, GM director, Application Development, Global Connected Consumer. “RemoteLink is one of the most-used automotive manufacturer apps in the marketplace and is a great example of what you can do with built-in vehicle connectivity.”

The app, GM says, is most commonly used nearly 600,000 times a month for checking vehicle data such as oil life, tire pressure and fuel level.

RemoteLink for Windows, like the Blackberry version, was written using HTML5 technology.

The app will be available for OnStar subscribers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and will support four language options: US English, Canadian English, French Canadian and Spanish.

This expansion comes on the heels of the announcement that RemoteLink’s key-fob based features – remote start, lock, unlock and horn and lights activation – would be standard for five years on all new GM vehicles. This launch means that GM drivers with select Windows phones will be able to access RemoteLink key-fob features as well. The five years of standard remote key-fob services does not include access to additional OnStar services.

RemoteLink connects to a driver’s vehicle in a secure fashion, requiring a username and password to log in and a four digit PIN to make a remote vehicle command.

OnStar subscribers can download the application and visit to enable remote commands.

Now I wonder if the Seattle Seahawks will enjoy a similar fate as the MSFT stock price.

Who knows, maybe the Zune will come back into vogue. Nah …
